Mother and daughter next to a fall tree at the Oxbow Nature Study in Reno
Earthtone Family Portraits by Reno Family Photographer
November 6, 2020 In Family No Comment

How cute are Makinna and Marley in these earthtone family portraits at the Oxbow Nature Study in Reno?!

Marley was understandably suspicious of me for a bit. Kids her age typically are when they meet me for the first time. But I love the smiles and expressions I captured of her throughout our time together on a warm October afternoon.

Fall Oxbow Earthtone Family Portraits

We wandered down the lovely dirt trails of the Oxbow Nature Study and Marley enjoyed some time playing in the grass and dirt. Earthones were a great color scheme for this family shoot.

I was also totally in love with how much Marley loves stuffed animals. And I enjoyed getting to know Marley and catching up with one of her mommas! I photographed Marley’s Moms’ wedding a few years back and it is one of my favorite weddings I’ve ever captured TO THIS DAY.

Seriously, I am so glad I get to photograph families and kids for a living – it’s been an amazing October and I’m looking forward to finishing up my year of scheduled shoots before the holidays!

Colorful UNR fall photos by Reno Family Photographer
Colorful UNR Family Photos by Reno Family Photographer
November 6, 2020 In Family No Comment

The Obritsch family picked a perfect fall day for their colorful UNR family photos! I’ve photographed this family a few times now and I LOVE catching up with them and seeing their kids grow up!

Seriously, the best part of my job is to witness to all the fun changes throughout the years for families that come back to me again and again!

Red Ivy for colorful UNR family photos

The red ivy wall at UNR is possibly one of my favorite spots, and you’ll see why when you check out these portraits. Look at the gorgeous variety of colors! And how perfect was this family’s wardrobe to coordinate with the fall foliage!?

I had a blast getting smiles from the girls and hearing all about their school lives. The youngest here happens to love dinosaurs JUST like my 5-year-old, so I had fun asking her to ROAR! These are the things that make my heart happy <3

Check out my favorites from this beautiful family, and if you’re looking for a fun spot to take fall photos, know that UNR is one of the best!

Relaxed Reno Fall Portraits by Reno Family Photographer
November 5, 2020 In Family No Comment

I had the honor of photographing the awesome Gerken family this fall and I’m so excited to share their relaxed Reno fall portraits!

Their kids have grown so much since the last time I saw them, plus they added a new little guy. And he just totally stole my heart!

Updated Family Portraits

Isn’t it crazy how time flies? Watching kids grow is part of what makes me so happy as a family photographer! And I thoroughly enjoyed capturing new and updated portraits of each kid, plus photos of all three together.

It’s always fun to change a session up with a 2nd wardrobe option, and if you’re a football fan, you might like what you see when you scroll down! Spoiler alert: they changed into San Francisco 49er shirts and I LOVE how fun those portraits are! They are lucky enough to have an official 49er helmet, too!

It was an absolute blast to photograph this family again (I photographed Steven & Samantha’s wedding quite a few years ago now) and I can’t wait to see them again soon!

If you’re looking for a Reno family photographer to provide relaxed fall portraits, make sure to contact Fifth and Chestnut with our CONTACT tab. We’d love to connect with you and create beautiful family portraits for you!

Theo’s spunky child portraits at Galena Creek by Reno Child Photographer
October 8, 2020 In Children 1 Comment

I was so excited to photograph Theo’s spunky child portraits for his third year! Seeing this guy grow since the age of 1 has been SO much fun!

I can’t believe he’s already 3! Check out his previous portraits if you want to see just how much he’s grown!

Galena Creek Child Portraits

For his portraits this year, his mom and dad decided on the forest setting at Galena Creek park in Reno. It’s always a blast to photograph portraits there. But it’s absolutely special to be able to focus on just one child in that setting.

Theo explored. He collected rocks and leaves. He threw dirt. It was simply FUN! And I love the expressions I caught from this little man. This fun experience is why I’m calling these spunky child portraits!

We crossed creeks, checked out pinecones and it was great to see this park through the eyes of a child – just like when I bring my own kids here to explore.

We had a lot of fun together and I can’t wait to see this guy again soon. I hope your third year is absolutely special, Theo!

Group of five grandchildren pose together for summer caughlin ranch family photos
Coordinated Summer Caughlin Ranch Family Photos by Reno Family Photographer
September 10, 2020 In Family 1 Comment

I had the honor of being asked to photograph these beautifully coordinated summer Caughlin Ranch family photos!

Barbara has portraits done with her family at least once a year, since everyone is spread out through the western US. As you can imagine, gathering together is a very special occasion! I just ADORE that she celebrates with professional family portraits.

Caughlin Ranch Family Photos

It was truly a pleasure to get to know this wonderful family. I had such a fun time with them on a hot summer day in Caughlin Ranch.

I love doing photoshoots in the Caughlin Ranch area, and Barbara has the most beautiful home and yards. It allowed great variety for these portraits!

Unfortunately, the wind wasn’t behaving too well for us – but thank goodness for her beautiful sheltered porch for the smaller groups. The wind did settle for us a little bit so we could utilize Barbara’s gorgeous backyard space for the big group photos.

You’ll notice that everyone’s outfits are so perfectly coordinated, and I just LOVE that! I also really love how well all of the kids in this family cooperated for photos.

They are true professionals and it shows that having photos created many times pays off if you want your kids to “be good” for portraits! They had me laughing and smiling the whole time. I hope they could tell how entertaining they were even though I was wearing a mask!

I hope to work with this family again during their next gathering!

Prepare for Your Senior Photoshoot with Fifth and Chestnut Photo Co.
August 27, 2020 In Tips and Tricks No Comment

By now, you’ve probably heard me say that your high school senior portrait EXPERIENCE is an investment. Not only is it a financial investment for your parents, but it’s also an investment of your time. To help you spend your time more efficiently, I’m providing a comprehensive list of tips to help you prepare for your senior photoshoot with me!

Reno high school senior girl in red dress with wide brimmed hat walking down a paved path lined with yellow aspen trees in the fall at galena creek park for reno senior photos by Fifth and Chestnut Photo Co.

Before we book our shoot together (about 3-6 months in advance), you’ll have thought about the following things already:
What season your want your shoot to take place (keeping yearbook deadlines in mind).
How many outfits you want to be photographed in.
How long your photoshoot will last to accommodate your wardrobe changes.

Now you need to do the rest of your senior photoshoot prep!

3-6 Weeks Before Your Senior Photoshoot:

  1. Decide where you want your senior photoshoot to take place. I have a great list of locations if you don’t have a spot in mind.
  2. Assemble your outfit inspiration (hello, Pinterest) & begin to shop.
  3. Research and book your hair and makeup artists if you haven’t already added this service on to your session with me.
  4. Decide if you want to bring props to your senior photoshoot.
  5. Begin a teeth whitening regimen if desired.
  6. If you wear glasses – I HIGHLY recommend getting contacts if you don’t already, even if it’s JUST for this senior photoshoot. If you feel like you look “weird” without your glasses, consider purchasing your frames (or similar ones) without lenses. Lenses of any sort = glare. Transition lenses = sunglasses.

1 Week Before Your Senior Photoshoot:

  1. Make sure to drink lots of water! It helps clear your skin and moisturizes your lips.
  2. Liberally apply chapstick throughout the week – especially if you are on specific acne medications.
  3. Launder, iron and hang your outfits.
  4. Gather your accessories in bags and hang them up with their corresponding outfits. I also recommend keeping your shoes in a bag with your outfit so you don’t forget them!
  5. Get lots of rest (reduces puffy eyes, of course).

1-2 Days Before Your Senior Photoshoot:

  1. Gals: Prep your hair & skin as your hair and makeup artists have instructed you to do.
  2. Gals: Get your nails done (pampering time!), or paint your nails yourself (I recommend clear polish at minimum). Guys: trim and groom your nails!
  3. Eat healthy, nutrient-rich meals so your skin is in tip-top shape. Avoid greasy foods and starchy carbs (to reduce bloating).
  4. Gather and clean props (dust your musical instruments, give your doggie a bath, wash your car).
  5. Sleep well the night before your session. Try meditation if you haven’t been sleeping well in general. I recommend the Calm app!

THE BIG DAY:

  1. Give yourself lots of time to get ready.
  2. Make sure you groom your eyebrows/facial hair long before your hair & makeup session starts.
  3. Eat! Again, make sure the foods you eat this day are nutritious, but filling. Bring water & a snack to your senior photoshoot.
  4. Bring flip flops/slippers to walk from spot to spot if your photoshoot shoes are uncomfy.
  5. Bring your bag of makeup with your for any necessary touchups – especially lip gloss!
  6. Be happy! It’s time to have some FUN!

Summer Maternity Photos by Reno Maternity Photographer
July 25, 2020 In Maternity No Comment

Can I just scream with excitement from the rooftops about how stoked I was to create these amazing summer maternity photos? Not only have I been stuck at home since my last session (like most of us right now), I was also thrilled to see this family again.

I had the honor of photographing Kate & John’s wedding at the Twenty Mile House a few years ago. And I also photographed their epic snowy maternity session and their sweet boy’s arrival last year. I was so happy to connect with Oakley again and see what a spunky little lad he has become!

Now this trio is expecting a new baby girl and I am so excited for them!

Summer Maternity Photos with the Andreano Family

I thought their wardrobe color scheme was amazing for maternity photos at Crystal Peak Park in Verdi. Especially while anticipating the birth of a girl! Kate’s dress color was a perfect contrast against the lush greenery of the park. I also love the complimentary patterns on the shirts for the guys.

This sweet family also brought a gorgeous picnic blanket which made sitting in the grass just a smidge more comfy for a few shots.

Kates hair and makeup was also absolute perfection – shout out to Crystal Bell Beauty for fabulous hair and makeup services!!

I probably say this about most sessions, but I just love how this all came together. The colors, the location, the familiar faces and all! And I was so happy to be out doing what I absolutely LOVE to do.

Wish this family well as they get ready to bring their little girl home <3 I can’t wait to meet her!!

Spring one year portraits of one year old girl at Rancho San Rafael in May by Reno Child Photographer
Floral Spring One Year Portraits at Rancho San Rafael by Reno Child Photographer
June 5, 2020 In Babies & Kids Family No Comment

Miss Alyssa was due for her spring one year portraits in March as part of my Milestone Baby Program. Unfortunately, weather delayed our shoot and THEN…a global pandemic. Thankfully, Alyssa’s parents are totally understanding and we remained in contact so we could schedule her one-year shoot as soon as we were able.

Alyssa’s photoshoot actually landed during THE BEST TIME at Rancho San Rafael. Flowers for days. Daaaaays! I was in awe at the scenery around us. The gardeners at Rancho San Rafael are my garden IDOLS. They do such a wonderful job with their landscaping.

But let’s bring the attention back to this sweet girl who turned ONE!!

Girly One Year Portraits During FLOWER SEASON

I can’t believe how fast a year goes by. It feels like it was just yesterday when I posed her on a little pillow and put a tiny headband on her for newborn portraits. Now she is a babblin’ and standin’ little girl. It’s the best thing in the world to see my clients start families and then watch their sweet babes grow.

I loved seeing Alyssa in all of her amazing outfits. It was even more adorable when she snuggled her favorite toys! And believe it or not, I was able to get all of these shots using a long lens (which means I was shooting from over 6ft away).

So here is sweet Alyssa, looking like a fancy princess in her GORGEOUS and adorable outfits, plus family portraits with her awesome mom and dad! She is one LOVED little girl and I hope I get to see these guys again soon!

Reno Senior Photo Session Tips | A FREE Guide for Wardrobe, Location & More!
February 17, 2020 In Tips and Tricks No Comment

As a Tahoe and Reno high school senior photographer, I often get asked a LOT of questions surrounding the ins and outs of a senior photoshoot. Among those questions are always:
What should I wear?
Where should we shoot?
What do I bring?

No worries, fam – I am here to help with a list of do’s and don’t with wardrobe tips and LOADS MORE for your high school senior portraits.

Reno Senior Photo Session Tips from Fifth and Chestnut Photo Co.

SENIORS! I hope you’ll find this FREE GUIDE helpful in planning your high school senior portraits. Please reach out to me with questions or input…I am always here to help!

DO wear something that comfortably expresses your personality.

DO think about what you AND your family will being doing with the photos. Of course you’ll be posting them on Instagram. But you probably want them to mesh well with your family’s interior design preferences as well. OR stand out, depending on what you’re going for. If your family’s home decor and design is classic and elegant – will your photoshoot at a downtown Reno location with tons of graffiti fit in seamlessly if your parents put your pictures up on the wall? It’s just something to consider!

DON’T forget about shoes, hair and accessories. You will be photographed from head to toe! So make sure your nail polish isn’t chipping (on fingers AND toes)! That’s something that’s VERY difficult to photoshop (and often times impossible), so don’t let it ruin your favorite photos!

DO buy new outfits if you wish, but be sure to “test” the outfit beforehand so you know whether or not it’s truly comfortable in any position! Play around with accessories to see how you can really work your outfits, too!

DON’T wear something you can’t comfortably sit down in. You don’t want all of your photos to be stiff upright standing shots. Comfort is key. If you don’t feel comfortable, you won’t look comfortable.

DON’T expect your transition lenses in your glasses to be clear outdoors – they are sunglasses outdoors! Consider wearing contacts, or put your glasses away for your session. Even non-transition glasses have their own set of issues (hello, glare).

DON’T wear baseball caps – they will create harsh shadows over your forehead & eyes. Part of what makes a great portrait of you is seeing your eyes! By all means, bring hats as accessories, but don’t plan on wearing a hat for the entirety of your senior session.

DO consider the time of year and location of your shoot. If you’re getting senior photos done in the fall, think of colors that compliment orange, yellow and red. If choosing springtime, think about color that compliment green and pretty pastels (a variety of flowers will be in bloom). Are we shooting at the colorful West Street Market? If so, neutral colors like gray and white are awesome there.

DON’T wear TINY patterns (small checkerboard/ houndstooth etc), because they don’t photograph well. Neither do large graphics that wrinkle up in certain positions, becoming unreadable (logo t-shirts). Other things that don’t work are: thin straps, huge blocks of bright red & pink (and neon colors), too many matching colors and LOTS of black/white. It’s better to have contrasting/complimentary colors. Neutral colors as a base (like denim, khaki, gray, white etc) work great with pops of colors brought in through accessories and layers of clothing (jeans, a yellow tank and a white cardigan, for example). Bringing different accessories is a fun, easy & quick way to liven up your look – jewelry, scarves, jackets etc.

DON’T bring more than two outfits unless you book the appropriate length shoot for the number of outfits you want. Changing looks takes a lot longer than you might think, so plan in advance and book more than 1 hour if you want more than one outfit change during our shoot.

DO bring props! Props bring your personality to to forefront of your photos. Some examples are balloons, an instax camera…or your car! Pick something that really expresses your interests or what’s going on in your life at this moment.

DO rely on a professional makeup artist & hairstylist to highlight your beauty. Pretty, pretty please! I can even arrange this FOR YOU. I have seen so many times first-hand how pro hair and makeup make such an incredible difference in someone’s confidence. Contact me for my hairstylist and makeup artist recommendations.

DO visit my Pinterest Senior Inspiration board for outfit and color ideas.

Phew, that should cover it! I hope this article helps prepare you for your senior photoshoot with and that you LOVE your photos when you see them for the first time. Below are some examples the tips above in action!

And hey, if you’re ready for a senior photo experience of a lifetime, reach out to me to book YOUR amazing experience today!

Adorable Fall Desert Two Year Portraits of Theo by Reno Child Photographer
Adorable Fall Desert Two Year Portraits of Theo by Reno Child Photographer
February 11, 2020 In Babies & Kids 1 Comment

I’m so excited to share Theo’s adorable fall desert two year portraits! You may remember him from his hilarious cake smash for his first birthday. And I had a blast this year with Theo as we celebrate him turning two!

Desert Scenery at Golden Eagle Regional Park

Golden Eagle Regional Park was the perfect desert setting for this handsome little blue-eyed boy! I think his eyes really pop with the desert scenery, don’t you? He is just so cute, I can’t stand it. Also, I loved his little fauxhawk and the way he collected rocks during our session. He reminds me of own my curious toddlers!

This age range is one of my favorites to photograph. It’s a challenge to get their attention, but when you do, it’s so worth it! The first picture I’m sharing here was a LOT of work to get him to look my way – but I love the way his eyes connect with the camera. I hope I get to photograph this little fella every year – he’s a total joy!!

Happy 2nd Birthday, Theo!!
