Why Summer is the Best Time for Senior Portraits | Tips from a Reno Senior Photographer
One question I get asked a lot is “when is the best time to get my senior portraits done?” And although I’m going to explain in this post why summer is the best time for senior portraits, we’ll cover all the seasons!
So first of all, senior portraits are meant to document you in your last year of high school and CAPTURE the expression of your personality authentically. So if you’re the type of person who THRIVES on pumpkin spice lattes and trips to the pumpkin patch, you might be a fall photo person. Or if skiing is your LIFE, maybe you want a winter session. However, ALL seniors can benefit from a summer senior session and here are 5 reasons why:
One, summer weather is ideal.
Summer weather is optimal. And I know what you’re thinking: “isn’t it hot outside?” While it can be toasty in the summertime, of course, we actually do our photoshoots in the evening when it’s the coolest part of the day. In fall, winter and spring, we can experience some really low temperatures here in Northern Nevada. And after doing this for 15+ years, I know that students handle the heat WAY better than the cold. Don’t let your dream senior session turn into an experience where you’re wishing it would end because it’s so frigid. Bask in the sun and have fun 🙂
Two, you’re off from school!
This is probably the most simple reason why summer is the best time for senior portraits. When you’re not in school, your schedule is typically much easier to work with, and you’ll get a stress-free experience of doing your senior portraits on a day where you don’t have anything else planned. And better yet, no homework.
Three, there is more wiggle room for rescheduling IF there are any weather issues like summer storms or excessively windy afternoons.
If weather issues arise during the summer, like storms or crazy-windy days, there is so much more wiggle room in your schedule and mine. We can simply move your session date to a time with better weather and it won’t be a big hassle like it can be when school is in session.
Four, you’ll have your senior portraits checked off your to-do list before school starts.
Senior year can be PRETTY hectic, you know. There’s all the LASTS – your last homecoming, last assemblies, last games and of course, your last prom. So you most likely want to be present for ALL THE THINGS. Therefore, getting your senior portraits handled PRIOR to the start of senior year is going to majorly ease some unecessary stress. Making sure you’re not overloaded with things to take care of and do during senior year can only be good for your mental health. And if you know me, you know I’m ALL about taking care of your mental health.
Five, you’ll be able to share your pictures EVERY #SeniorSunday of your senior year.
Having those portraits in-hand before school starts means that you get to celebrate being a senior ALL YEAR LONG. That’s so many Senior Sundays that you can post your pictures for! Plus, you can give your portraits as gifts long before your graduation. Because you have family members that want to celebrate this fun time with you as well!

Maybe another time of year is your vibe? Let’s discuss…
Although summer IS the ideal time to get senior photos done for MOST students, there might be reasons you want a different season.
FALL: You may LOVE fall color and the changing of the leaves. Or maybe you love cozy sweaters and boots. Fall just might be a good match for you! However, you just gotta know that fall weather can be fickle.
WINTER: If you are a true lover of winter sports, you may actually want a winter session. The question is – do you want to deal with winter weather? It’s a personal decision – make sure you’re happy with it!
SPRING: There are LOTS of beautiful flowers in spring. I love the season because the cold weather is changing, flowers begin to bloom and the sun begins to shine. However, the weather can be REALLY tricky in spring. We’re talking 75 degrees one day and 35 degrees the next – with waning time to reschedule due to weather issues. Make sure to be aware of the challenges!
