How to Make your Reno/Tahoe Senior Portraits Unique

November 20, 2022 in Tips and Tricks

In the 15 years I’ve been a photographer, I’ve found that my senior clients’ number one worry is that their senior portraits will look exactly like their FRIENDS’ senior photos. No one wants to feel like a carbon copy of any one else. That’s why I put together this simple list for how to make your Reno/Tahoe senior portraits UNIQUE so that your personal portraits will be TOTALLY unlike anyone else’s and authentically showcase your personality and style!

The top 5 ways to make your senior portraits unique:

1) Pick a location that fits your personal style

You can tailor your senior portraits to uniquely fit your personal vibe! How? By choosing a location that coordinates with your personality! If you are someone who loves the beach, what could be a better place than the shores of Lake Tahoe? Whether you love the forest, mountains or Northern Nevada open desert, there is a place that works with your style. It’s my job as a Reno Senior Photographer to help you choose locations that MESH perfectly with your personality, interests and style!

2) Get your hair & makeup done professionally

When you are inspired by a look you LOVE, a professional can give you a look that will be UNLIKE the styles your friends had for their sessions. Many people pass on hair and makeup services…typically because they think they can just do hair and makeup their self. And while some teens can do a GREAT job with their hair and makeup – only a professional hair and makeup artist knows how to provide styles that photograph well and do makeup in a way that will truly cover blemishes and make you look like the best version of yourself that will last ALL DAY and look FANTASTIC on-camera. And by the way, this is why I actually INCLUDE complimentary hair and makeup services in every senior session booked with me!

3) Express yourself with clothing choices

Pick wardrobe pieces that you are comfortable with, and some that are out of your comfort zone to express your personality. Unlike some photographers in the Reno/Tahoe area, when you book a session with Fifth and Chestnut Photo Co, you are not limited to one outfit. I am prepared with a pop-up privacy tent for you to easily change your outfit several times in the course of our time together! So even if you WANT to wear an outfit that is similar to your friend’s for one part of your session, you can change it up for the rest!

4) Bring props

What better way to showcase your interests and personality than to bring props that do that work for you? Sports uniforms, cars and musical instruments are just some quick ideas. The sky is the limit! Bringing these items really puts your personality and interests into your session and helps authentically express yourself. Plus, if you’re nervous at all, having items that are near and dear to you can help bring your comfort level up!

5) Include your best friend or your pet

Did your friends include a furry friend or a buddy in their photoshoot? Probably not! This is something that can totally set your portraits apart and add a level of specialness to your personal portraits! A friend can also help you feel more at ease – AND they can capture fun behind-the-scenes pics and vids for all of us to share. How cool would that be!? Did you know that I let every Fifth and Chestnut senior invite their friends & family to senior sessions?!
